Artificial intelligence innovations: Leading companies in AI-assisted underwriting for the insurance industry

#artificialintelligence

The insurance industry continues to be a hotbed of innovation, with activity driven by growing demand for digitalisation and personalisation. With growing importance of technologies such as telematics, machine learning, big data, deep learning, and data science, insurers are overcoming demographic challenges, low penetration rates, cybercrimes and fraudulent claims. In the last three years alone, there have been over 11,000 patents filed and granted in the insurance industry, according to GlobalData's report on Artificial intelligence in Insurance: AI-assisted underwriting. However, not all innovations are equal and nor do they follow a constant upward trend. Instead, their evolution takes the form of an S-shaped curve that reflects their typical lifecycle from early emergence to accelerating adoption, before finally stabilising and reaching maturity. Identifying where a particular innovation is on this journey, especially those that are in the emerging and accelerating stages, is essential for understanding their current level of adoption and the likely future trajectory and impact they will have.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- A research team has proposed an artificial intelligence (AI) system in which robots not only serve as listeners but also speakers, providing an opportunity for AI to better understand human expectations. In this AI system, a group of robots predicted human intents by taking in situ feedback into consideration while explaining their decision-making processes to humans, forming a bidirectional relationship, according to the study findings published in the journal Science Robotics. The team was led by Chinese researchers from the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence, and the findings showed that real-time mutual understanding between humans and robots in complex tasks was achievable with a learning model based on bidirectional communication. "If the goal of a task can be described clearly, it is not difficult for AI to understand the value requirements of the task," said Zheng Zilong, a researcher at the institute. He, however, added that the goals of many tasks in life fail to be defined directly.

Artificial intelligence innovation among private banking industry companies has dropped off in the last year

#artificialintelligence

Research and innovation in artificial intelligence, AI, in the private banking sector has declined in the last year. The most recent figures show that the number of AI related patent applications in the industry stood at 40 in the three months ending January – down from 651 over the same period in 2020. Figures for patent grants related to AI followed a similar pattern to filings – shrinking from 97 in the three months ending January 2020 to 17 in the same period in 2021. The figures are compiled by GlobalData, who track patent filings and grants from official offices around the world. Using textual analysis, as well as official patent classifications, these patents are grouped into key thematic areas, and linked to key companies across various industries.

Artificial Intelligence Innovation: The Future With OpenAI GPT-3

#artificialintelligence

GPT-3 is the 3rd release of the OpenAI collection of Generative Pre-Trained models. GPT-1 and GPT-2 laid the foundations for GPT-3, proving the success of two key hypotheses: Transformers unsupervised pre-training works fine (GPT-1), and language models can multitask (GPT-2). GPT-3 is a language model built on the transformer architecture and pre-trained in an unsupervised, generative manner which has a decent performance in one-shot, zero-shot & few-shot multitask settings. It functions by anticipating the next token in the sequence of tokens, and it can do this for NLP tasks that it's not been taught. After some instances, it reached the highest performance in specific benchmarks, like machine translating, Q&A, and Cloze tasks. GPT-3 was trained on massive Internet text databases, a total of 570GB.

How Artificial Intelligence Innovations are Used in the Fitness Industry - ReadWrite

#artificialintelligence

It's hard to find an industry that isn't in the process of being transformed by digital technologies, and the world of fitness is no exception. While people have been working out or exercising for decades, if not centuries, how they're doing so is rapidly evolving. Here is how artificial intelligence innovations are used in the fitness industry. Technologies like digital wearables enhanced with artificial intelligence are a natural fit for the fitness industry. Some of these products and solutions have already seen increasingly widespread adoption, while others are only beginning to penetrate consumer consciousness.

NIST awards small businesses $4M for artificial intelligence innovation

Mojdeh Bahar: So as you know intellectual property is a rather complex issue. But generally SBIR awardees retain rights to all of the intellectual property that they develop during the award. The reason I say generally is because we have a type of SBIR word which is called SBIR technology transfer. And those are based on technologies that have already been conceived and reduced to practice at NIST. And a company comes, takes that technology and furthers it.
